Lead Heavy Duty Mechanic (Goodwood)

We are seeking an energetic Lead Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our team at our Goodwood facility!

Reporting directly to the Yard General Manager and working alongside the Shredder Manager, you will:

  • Ensure all of our equipment and machinery is in good working order and ensure smooth operations.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs of heavy equipment (including but not limited to excavators, loaders, container chassis, etc)
  • Develop a preventative and predictive maintenance and repair program.
  • Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform repairs to manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Schedule dealer service as necessary
  • Schedule appointments at the local garage for our shunt truck repairs if cannot complete on site.
  • Schedule third party mechanic for larger jobs as necessary and for bobcat and skid steer repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy personal work area and assist with general cleaning duties in the maintenance shed.
  • Maintain a daily record of all work tasks and materials and encourage and support continuous improvement in work practices.
  • Perform related work as required.

As the Ideal Candidate, you will bring to the table:

  • Reliable transportation to the site as it is not on a bus route.
  • Ability to work Monday-Friday from 7 am-5:30 pm and Saturdays from 7 am-12 pm as needed.
  • Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic with minimum 5 years of experience working on Excavators and Loaders.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to effectively lead and mentor our Apprentice Mechanic.
  • Knowledge on maintaining equipment such as Hyundai 760 loader with bucket and fork quick attach, John Deere 544K loader with bucket attachment, Ottawa shunt trucks, chassis, etc.
  • Skilled in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to analyze and repair mechanical failures.

John Ross & Sons is currently seeking Labourer’s to join our team. As the largest scrap metal recycling facility in Atlantic Canada, we seek energetic and safety minded individuals to join our expanding team!

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Cleaning equipment
  • Maintain organized inventory
  • Maintain clean work environment
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Manual labor involved
  • Picking Line, sorting material off the line

Qualifications and Skills

  • Steel toed boots
  • Ability to carry and lift up to 60lbs repetitively
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions
  • Ability to maintain and organize inventory is a priority

Please note that locations can be remote in their lo location. There is not access to public transportation. Applicants will be required to have their own reliable transportation to and from work.

Operations Manager (Halifax, NS)

Job description

We seek an ambitious, dedicated Senior Yard Operations Manager to work at our Halifax, NS location. The individual will report directly to Senior Management and be accountable for all aspects of the operations of the company. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter who thrives on success from accomplishment.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible to drive the overall success of the operations including traffic/freight logistics, maintenance, and warehouse/yard. Examples of specific duties include (but are not limited to):

General

  • Develop and maintain a strong relationship with the senior management team/owners, finance, administration and sales departments, trucking and bins, trailer and the customer settlement coordinator
  • Manage all aspect of operations to optimize efficiency and utilization
  • Provide regular status updates to Senior Management team on progress/developments/issues
  • Actively identify areas of improvement to advance current processes and procedures
  • Understand and convert organizational goals into processes and procedures
  • Ensure day-to-day activities are carried out in a safe manner to minimize risk to employees, working environment etc.
  • Achievement of performance targets by directing and overseeing the work of employees to achieve maximum efficiency
  • Monitor the quality, efficiency, and performance of employees in day-to-day operations of all areas
  • Adhere to and monitor compliance of all company policies, procedures, safety policies and business ethics
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Senior Management Team

Traffic/Freight/Logistics

  • Proper tracking of all appointments for loads at mill/ocean freight/rail/land transport, to ensure trailers are booked, material is staged, and subsequently shipped out to meet contract requirements
  • Ensure clarity on the plan for contracts being loaded, and/or transported in day(s) and week ahead
  • Based on contract requirements, create a mechanism to adequately plan all dates for appointment creation, staging, and shipping material off of property

Maintenance

  • Develop, manage and monitor a preventative maintenance program for all equipment.
  • Order, purchase, and maintain an inventory of equipment
  • Ensure that maintenance program is being implemented and followed
  • When required, investigate, review and evaluate equipment replacement needs, and assess purchase, rental or leasing options

Yard/Warehouse

  • Inventory measurement and monitoring
  • Develop and implement plans to efficiently handle each commodity – including purchase, receiving, loading/unloading, sorting, bailing, storing, and shipping
  • Ensure uninterrupted and cost-effective production within the plant. This involves scheduling of daily production
  • Oversee the processing or testing of materials and facilitates the preparation of out bound shipments

Working Conditions

  • Working outside on a full-time basis in all weather conditions, with significant walking and moderate physical activity throughout the day

Hours of Work

  • Monday to Friday, 7am-5pm; Saturdays 7am-12pm

Skill Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years’ management experience in a recycling facility
  • Knowledge of various metal types and grades
  • Proven ability to professionally maintain key relationships with stakeholders and customers
  • Other Trades Certificate or Diploma
  • Up to date knowledge of current industry standards, trends and equipment
  • Must have excellent leadership and people management skills
  • Ability to analyze, develop, establish, and maintain efficient work flow processes
